Pop-Up Celebrations Bring Alumni Together

In June, the UMass Amherst Alumni Association threw pop-up parties in Boston, New York City, Washington D.C., and the Pioneer Valley to continue its 150th Anniversary celebration.

The UMass Amherst Alumni Association is celebrating 150 years of alumni community and pride all year long! From gathering alumni to raise money for scholarships at a Red Sox game in June, to big plans for Homecoming this fall, the Alumni Association is keeping the party going.

One of the most recent ways the association marked this impressive milestone was with four pop-up parties held earlier this summer throughout the northeast.

More than 350 alumni gathered in New York City, Washington D.C., Boston, and Western Massachusetts to recognize 150 years of shaping and supporting UMass Amherst’s transformation into a top-tier public university.

“We had stellar turnout at all events, with alumni spanning six decades in attendance, and we had one thing in common: being proud alumni of the University,” noted Michelle-Kim Cohen ’03, UMass Amherst Alumni Association president-elect. “This is also a great kick-off as we continue to focus on re-engaging our geographic affinity networks and hope to have more regional UMAAA events going forward.”

"It was so exciting to make new connections across class years and career fields, and I was even able to see friends I made at UMass who I haven’t met up with since graduation.”

There was no cost to attend, and guests enjoyed free appetizers and their first drink free. Attendees socialized, expanded their local alumni networks, and caught up with classmates and friends.

Representatives from the Alumni Association Board of Directors joined the party at each event, and affinity groups, such as Women for UMass, were well represented.

As Boston attendee Melissa Myers ’18 reflected, "It was so exciting to make new connections across class years and career fields, and I was even able to see friends I made at UMass who I haven’t met up with since graduation. The warm, fun setting made it easy to meet people, and the friendly UMass event staff brought terrific swag. I had a great time—I’m looking forward to the next one! "
